June Is DeafBlind Awareness Month: Listening, Learning, and Supporting Together

Each June, we observe DeafBlind Awareness Month — a time to honor the strength, resilience, and unique experiences of individuals who live with both hearing and vision loss. Inspired by the birth month of Helen Keller, a pioneer and advocate who was both Deaf and blind, this month is a reminder of the importance of communication access, connection, and community.

What Does It Mean to Be DeafBlind?
DeafBlindness doesn’t always mean total vision and hearing loss. It refers to any combination of vision and hearing challenges that impact a person’s ability to communicate, access information, and move through the world. Every person’s experience is unique and so are their needs.

When your child is DeafBlind you may be asking:

  • How will my child learn and communicate?
  • What services and supports are available?
  • Where do I begin and what do I prioritize?

We are here to help you answer those questions — and more.

How BEGINNINGS Supports Families of Children Who Are DeafBlind
At BEGINNINGS, we walk alongside families of children who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or DeafBlind from birth to age 22. Our Parent Educators are trained to provide support that meets your family’s emotional and practical needs.

We can help you:

  • Understand your child’s diagnosis
  • Navigate early intervention and educational services
  • Access assistive technology and communication tools
  • Advocate for your child’s unique needs
  • Find connection with other families and professionals

You are not alone. Your child’s future is full of possibility and we’re here to help you discover it.

Let’s Keep Learning and Building Awareness
DeafBlind Awareness Month is about more than awareness — it’s about action. It’s about making sure every child has the chance to be seen, heard, and understood in the ways that work best for them. It’s about making sure you, as a parent or caregiver, feel supported every step of the way.

If your child has a dual sensory loss — or you’re just beginning the journey of understanding — reach out to us.
